[Synopsis] This is a unique work that integrates historical, anthropological, and botanical exploration. The book focuses on the legendary botanical expeditions of Western botanists (such as the Scottish botanist George Forrest and the American scholar Joseph Rock) in Western China and Tibet during the first half of the 20th century. By peeling back grand historical narratives, the author delves into the microscopic world of diaries, letters, specimens, and archives to delicately reconstruct the complex, vivid, and subtle collaborative relationships and daily lives between Western explorers and two generations of local Nakhi guides and assistants. Through a unique phenomenological perspective, the work retraces those "trails of exploration" imprinted on paper pages and specimens, revealing humanity, nature, and historical memory amidst cross-cultural encounters.
